M.A.S.K.: Vehicles, Masks, and Completeness
Updated February 3, 2026
M.A.S.K. - Mobile Armored Strike Kommand - launched from Kenner in 1985 and ran through 1988, occupying the conceptual space between G.I. Joe's small-figure action and Transformers' vehicle transformation. Each set included a compact action figure and a vehicle that converted between its civilian form and a weapon-equipped combat mode, held together by a central story conceit: secret agents wearing energy masks with distinct powers fighting the criminal VENOM organization. The line produced four waves before Kenner closed it, leaving a tight catalog of vehicles, figures, and accessories that completionists can now map in their entirety.
M.A.S.K. pulls collectors because the transformation mechanic put the toy design ambition into the vehicles rather than the figures - Rhino, the semi-truck that converts into a mobile battle station, is the landmark piece, but Boulder Hill (the gas station playset that transforms into a mountaintop fortress) is the functional grail at the top of most M.A.S.K. collections. The 3.75-inch scale made M.A.S.K. figures compatible with G.I. Joe, which expanded the original play pattern and now adds a cross-collection dimension for serious vintage toy collectors working both lines.
Two practical habits. Inventory mask accessories and vehicle weapon attachments separately from the main vehicle and figure - M.A.S.K. accessories are small, numerous, and routinely missing from pieces described as "complete" by sellers who haven't cross-referenced the original parts list. And document rubber-tire condition on vehicles; the early rubberized tires on Kenner M.A.S.K. vehicles deteriorate with age into sticky residue, and replacement tires affect the completeness standard the community applies to otherwise mint examples.
